Southwestern Light - page 1 Photographed in early morning light from Point Imperial, on the north rim of the Grand Canyon, this photograph emphasizes the receding layers in the landscape made visible by backlighting and particulate matter in the atmosphere. At least twenty different layers are readily apparent in this image. In this "Land of Layers" these subtle, stacked layers of topography are distinctly different from the colorful and strikingly obvious rock layers. We noticed this unexpected photo opportunity as we were hiking back to the car, following a sunrise photo shoot. We photographed it immediately, handheld, to make sure we didn't miss this potentially fleeting phenomenon. By the time the tripod was set up it was gone.
