Dawn at Deadwater

There are only a few days each year when the sun’s rays can reach this climb at dawn. The week after the summer solstice, the rising sun briefly illuminates the arête with its golden light. Hiking in to the cliff while it was still dark, Katie scampered up the lower section of the climb while R.L. ascended a fixed rope we had left the evening before. Both were in position as the first rays of sunshine peeked through the trees onto the rock. After just a few minutes the golden dawn glow gave way to daylight.
