Hardcover Books

The books listed below, offered as "Collector's Editions", focus on the best possible photo reproduction, employing the highest quality printing, paper and binding currently available for limited press runs. Each is produced individually via the latest on-demand printing methods. This approach allows us much greater control over the production process than traditional offset printing affords and it permits us to customize every aspect of a book's presentation, from the materials used to make it to the technical minutiae required to optimize reproduction of each photograph.

Designed to present our photographs at their best, each book is a luxurious, large format, coffee table style volume printed on heavy, luster paper, and bound in hard cover with a dust jacket. We use an uncluttered monograph layout, with one photo per page. To minimize intrusions we include only the most basic caption details on each page, or sometimes none at all. An included addendum booklet, keyed by page number to each photograph, provides more details about how, and sometimes why, each photograph was made. This allows the viewer to page through the photographs without distraction, or to read the descriptions for each photograph by placing the booklet alongside them in the book. For serious photographers, we also provide a link to the Vertical Perspectives Photography web site where a private gallery includes EXIF details for each photo.

Because these books are produced individually, and they decidedly favor quality over mass market appeal, they are costly to produce and priced accordingly. That said, short of our custom-crafted fine art prints, these books provide the best way to view our photographs.

Our "Collector's Edition" books are available exclusively through us directly. Each copy is signed and inscribed (as per your specifications).  We stock only a few copies; production time, if our stock is insufficient, adds 2 to 3 weeks. Books can be ordered via this web site or you can purchase books at our Alpenhaus Gallery in Keene. It's always best to contact us before stopping by since we don't maintain regular shopkeeper's hours and we are often out in the mountains.

Classic Adirondack Climbs

Rock, Ice & Slide Climbing Photographs from the East's Largest Wilderness

This book showcases striking photography from noteworthy rock, ice and slide climbs in the vast wilderness of northern New York State’s Adirondack Park. Seen through the eyes of photographers and career mountain guides, R.L. & Karen Stolz who, for more than three decades, have climbed and guided these “classic” routes, the 105 photographs featured in these pages offer a visual feast for climbers and non-climbers alike.

Using cutting-edge equipment and techniques, including some invented especially for this project, the images in this book allow the viewer to experience the essence of climbing, and the splendor of the Adirondack Mountains throughout the seasons. In addition to this large format monograph, the complete Classic Adirondack Climbs project includes a climber’s guidebook, in ebook format, to all of the routes photographed for this volume, plus many others. A collection of custom crafted fine art prints is also available as part of this project.

The photographs presented in this volume were selected from over 50,000 photos gathered by R.L. and Karen from more than 100 photo shoots since 2013. For those who frequent the Adirondack Mountains, as well as those who hope to in the future, Classic Adirondack Climbs offers a unique perspective on this extraordinary place.

This 12"x12" large format, 110 page Collector's Edition, contains 105 of our photos, each fine-tuned specifically for this book. Printed via the color-accurate Indigo printing system, the 100# premium lustre paper along with the glossy, wraparound dust jacket and quality hard cover binding provide a distinctive presentation for our work.

Southwestern Light

Photographs from the American Southwest

Light, and its infinitely variable interplay with form, tone, texture and color, is the essential element in every photograph. As photographers we are always seeking interesting ways to illuminate our subjects and the American southwest is legendary for its extraordinary natural light. With its abundance of unique natural features, this land of desert, canyons, striking rock formations and colors that border on the surreal, understandably draws photographers from around the globe, including us. This volume gathers photographs from four separate trips to the American southwest in 2013, 2014 and 2016. Included are photographs we’ve made of iconic subjects, hopefully portrayed uniquely by our interpretations of those subjects, but we are most strongly drawn to the fringes, off the beaten path and far from crowds. In these places our creative process is heightened by the silence and we are free to see freshly. This is where our most satisfying photographs are usually made.

This 12"x12" large format, 148 page Collector's Edition, contains 141 of our photos, each fine-tuned specifically for this book. Printed via the color-accurate Indigo printing system, the 100# premium lustre paper along with the glossy, wraparound dust jacket and quality hard cover binding provide a distinctive presentation for our work.
